Local Nature Recovery Strategies (LNRS)

What is an LNRS?
Local Nature Recovery Strategies (LNRS) are a new, national approach in England to help restore nature at a local level. Each strategy sets out priorities and practical actions to protect, connect and improve habitats across a region, from woodlands and wetlands to meadows and riverbanks. They’re led by local authorities but developed in partnership with communities, landowners, charities, and environmental experts.

These strategies are more than just maps or policies, they’re about working together to support wildlife, create more green spaces, and make sure nature can thrive alongside people.

Why does it matter?
LNRSs will guide where and how nature recovery takes place, influencing local planning, funding decisions, and conservation efforts. They’re a key part of tackling the nature and climate crises, while also supporting community wellbeing, food security, and flood resilience.

Our role at the Forest of Avon
At the Forest of Avon, nature recovery is at the heart of everything we do. That’s why we’re actively supporting the development of Local Nature Recovery Strategies in our region.

Here’s how we’re involved:

  • Bringing expertise on tree planting, woodland creation and management to help shape priorities that benefit people and wildlife.
  • Delivering projects that support LNRS goals, like improving biodiversity, providing everyone, regardless of ability or background, with more access to nature, and planting trees to create greener, healthier places to live.
  • Working with our partners including councils, farmers, community groups and other charities to ensure nature recovery is a joined-up effort.
  • Championing nature in everything we do, making sure the voices of our local communities and the needs of the environment are heard together.

We believe LNRSs are a huge opportunity to create a better, more connected landscape across the West of England.
